The pork chop bun

About to make my 3rd trip to Macau. Two things I have missed out on in the past is the Pork chop bun, is the place to get them at Tai Lei in Taipa? Are they served only at 3pm? I would imagine from the Venetian taxi would be best?

Lastly I have never eaten at Fernando’s, is it as good as everyone says, the menu I have seen online looks yummy, what do the experts recommend, timing and transport information (going to be there on Tues Weds Thurs) would be really appreciated.

The pork chop bun

Glad to see you coming back, Jhbboy :-)

Pork chop buns are quite popular for breakfast or afternoon tea; it%26#39;s just that Tai Lei has somehow captured the tourist trade. IMO the ones around the corner at the cha-chaang teng (local el-cheapo) just across from the Sino-Portuguese School are just as good, or if you%26#39;re in Senado Square they also do good ones at Leitaria I Son.

I%26#39;ve really enjoyed the food and ambience at Fernando%26#39;s, though on weekends it is sometimes taken over by HK business yobbos who%26#39;ve been let off the leash (no, I DON%26#39;T think it%26#39;s hysterically funny when you pour a jug of sangria over your neighbour%26#39;s head ...). Fortunately you%26#39;ll be there midweek - shouldn%26#39;t be too much trouble getting a table.

For me the stand-out dish is the big prawns in special sauce, and there%26#39;s always the temptation to eat so much of their special bread that I can%26#39;t finish all the more nourishing stuff.

The pork chop bun

hi, thanks for the information, I will try the ';local el cheapo';, I hate places that become tourist optimised.

Fernando%26#39;s for dinner then, and maybe lunch the next day :) prawns always sound good.

Relying on taxi%26#39;s for both outings should be ok?

Cant wait to go back it will be 3rd vist in 10months, guess I have caught the Macau bug.

Hi, previous thread advice is good.

Yes Tai Lei as you mentioned in Taipa, and yes these buns are served only at 3pm,but queue start to built up(tourist bus load). Frankly, nothing impressive-just like a run down shack(my personal opinion).

Have it a Leitaria I Son,and complement it with their steamed milk in different flavours.I found it (pork bun) is good and nicer eating atmosphere than the one at Tai Lei.

Hmm,have not discovered the one close to Sino-Portugese school,so would love to get directions/landmarks to this place for pork buns.

By the way, it is possible to hot foot from Venetian Macao to Tai Lei (and then to Run du Cunha);I saw the taxi queue at Venetian, and decided to ask concierge for walking direction; to my surprise very bearable;less than 10minutes,and I am on Rua do Regedor.

Aside from Fernando%26#39;s in Coloane,I have discovered another undiscovered gem at Espaco Lisboa-it is in a two story house on a side street behind a bicycle repair shop.Rua dos Gaivotas-just off central square of Coloane Village. Clams with garlic, and highlight-melted feta covered in honey, served on a thick slice of wholemeal, and also the juicy steak with parma ham.

Well, you could still count your number of trips to Macau, and I trust, one day,you would have lost counts of your Macao trips(which I have)and still discovering, especially restaurants and more shopping like DFS at Four Seasons The Shoppes. Really exhilarating retail therapy.

mKiara, thanks for the review of the ';little'; Lisboa - I know it has been there for years, so I figured it must be good, but I still haven%26#39;t managed to eat there (or at about 5000 other places in Macau!). The Taipa cha chaang teng is just next to the bus stop where the road turns a sharp bend into Rua de Regedor.

Jhbboy, yes, taxi will be fine if you don%26#39;t want to increase your appetite by walking ;-) If the driver doesn%26#39;t know Fernando%26#39;s, just tell him Hac Sa (the beach next door).

Thank you, went and a pork chop bun (2 actually) YUM

Less than 10mins walk.

Fernando%26#39;s tonight........

Jhbboy, I%26#39;m jealous that you%26#39;re there and I%26#39;m not!!

Enjoy :-)

Just came back from Fernando%26#39;s two days ago. Fanstatic place with good food as described by everyone here.

Took two cabs from Venetian for the 6 of us, for MOP 80 each cab. Decided to take a bus (no 25) back from Fernando to Taipa, MOP 6.40 only each!! From Taipa (Rue du Cunha) to Venetian, some of us walked back. The cab fare is about MOP 16 to Venetian.

Managed to get a table at the Fernando%26#39;s even though it was quite busy. There was no more tables at the back portion of the restaurant.

The bread was served in a very generous portion. Crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. We tried the clams, roast chicken, roast pork and vegetable soup. We regretted we did not order the crabs. Looks pretty yummy!!
