I think everyone is always keen to find out what people are paying at markets for things like clothes, sun glasses, watches and bags etc.
This a topic that has been running on the Shanghai Expat site.

If this doesn%26#39;t work I will delete the topic!!!!
Or start my own price list:
Haha, I like this topic. Guess the locals can give advice.
I%26#39;m planning a trip to BJ and research show these:
T-shirts: 20-25RMB Running Shoes: 50-80 RMB Dress Shoes: 80-100 RMB ';timberland'; boots: 120RMB Belts: 20 RMB Ties: 10 RMB Custom Shirts: 80 RMB Custom Suits: 600-800 RMB Jeans: 80 RMB Jackets: 100-150 RMB Baby clothes: 20-40 RMB
Bear in mind this is not what I paid but what others posted in the forum.
Custom Shirts: 40 RMB Custom Suits: 200-400 RMB
Price depends a bit on quality. If you go to silk street the general quality is the same (=poor) so check different items to pick out the best one.
They will set the starting price depending on how busy it is and on what country you are from (at least what they think). Also it makes a difference if you are on your own or with someone local. You can bargain hard, because they will never sell below their bottom price. Try out a few shops and you will see where that level is.
Also watch that you get the item of your choice and that they do not swap it.
If you go to whole sale markets where no tourists are coming, you only bargain on quality. The starting price there is already much lower and they do not sell western (fake) brands. Also there try out more of the same to see what is the best.
Fake electronics I would never buy in China.
You need to be careful about these prices as quality can vary widely. To give such a narrow range about shoes is misleading. I shop often at YaXiu at it is close to my apartment and if you want to pay little omney for a watch I know you can but if you expect your watch to work again next year then you will need to pay up. Cheap prices are actually too expensive when you buy poor quality.
Hey,
I buy all my fake electronics in China. Buy as much as you can and stop the corporate greed of american companies. yeah I have some probs but 80% are good and dont tell me the name brands don%26#39;t have issues. my cheap rubbish phones work better and more reliable than the name brands - strange they are made in the same cities (factories i don%26#39;t know but cities 100% certain!)my no name ';hello kitty'; phone is the best thing I have ever bought. blackberrys are duds at 12 times the price!
anyway some chinese brands are excellent eg aigo...
Just an overall thought --
I%26#39;ll haggle a bit -- but I don%26#39;t get brutal about it. I%26#39;m VERY fortunate to be able to travel and have a bit of spare cash ; and if the vendor seems to be a good sport and is having fun with me, I ABSOLUTELY don%26#39;t mind sharing my %26#39;wealth%26#39; with those far less fortunate than I.
asiatravel24 - Do you also pay more than the price tag in department stores?
Understand that in China, the tougher you negotiate the more respect you earn. This is a country where you negotiate everything and should always try to get a discount, even in department stores. Not the same as in western culture. Someone who overpays or tips (please don%26#39;t) is not considered generous but rather stupid.
Do not worry, they have a minimum price for every item. They never lose money.
