Actually when you tour the city you could find lots of hutongs, you could just go and walk along, there are not tourists attractions, but by walk along you could see how the locals life etc

Certain hutongs for tourists:Houhai lake area,Nanluogu xiang, jingshan dong jie

You walk out from the North Gate of Frobidden City, you will see a Hill, pass by it,then you will get behind the Hill.Go straight is your destination-Hutong area preserved.

A few years ago, my cousin and I walked from the Drum and Bell Tower area through the hutongs nearby. I%26#39;m sure the Beijing TA folks will know if the hutongs are still there.

Super safe, nice and quiet and peaceful. A fascinating look into a rapidly disappearing culture.

If there%26#39;s a way to bring along a Mandarin speaking friend -- all the better. Cousin Jamie speaks fluent Mandarin, and it made the experience MUCH better.

There are still hutongs around the Drum and Bell Towers, and can be a good area to explore along with the back lakes.

Nan luo guo xiang is an interesting hutong with some good small shops.

Go to both if you have time. One plus--the hutong areas are open after 5 PM, so good to do in the early evening.

chineseqing_2008 - you are right that these are for tourists but the people here are tourists!!!

If I lived in a hutong I%26#39;d hate to continuously have tourist peak into my yard to see what it is like. The are residential compounds after all. Those living in the touristy hutongs must be used to it.

I am wondering if it is easy to walk around by ourselves or better to hire a trishaw? What is the chances of getting lost in hutong?
