Yes, it is much much cheaper to do it yourself and use the excellent public transport in Hong Kong.

thanks for that, do you know how much the ferry would be?
There are many ways to get to the Big Buddha by public transport. You should really get an octopus card if you are going to use public transport.
One is the MTR from Causeway Bay to Tung Chung.
See www.mtr.com.hk/jplanner/eng/planner_index.php
The bus to Big Buddha.
See www.newlantaobus.com/
Or cable car from Tung Chung.
See www.np360.com.hk/
Or you can catch a ferry from Central to Mui Wo and then bus.
See www.nwff.com.hk/english/schedule/route.asp鈥?/a>
For buses on Lantau
Number 2 Mui Wo to Ngong Ping

thanks so much for those links, the websites are great! is the octopus card for both adult and child and how do they work? do you put so much money on them and it deducts the amount as you use it up?
First time pay HK$150 for the octopus (including HK$50 deposit). Then fares are deducted each time you use it. You can add extra value at many places- such as MTR stations and convenience stores.
See www.octopuscards.com/consumer/en/index.jsp
Any amount you don%26#39;t use at the end of the trip is refunded and so is your $50 deposit. There is a $7 handling charge that you lose. If you ride a few trips on the MTR, the savings will exceed the $7 anyway and the simple convenience across the entire public transportation network is unbeatable.
