In three weeks my 2 teen age granddaughters will be staying in Hong Kong. We plan on taking the train to Guangzhou for the day. (we have our visas). We will most likely be in Guangzhou for about 5 hours.
Several years ago when I was in Guangzhou I went to the Quin Ping market and found it fascinating. I thought that it would give the girls an idea of what the everyday China is like. I thought that also we would go to the Temple of the 6 Banyon Trees. These are places that I visited a while back. In looking at the current guide books, I see that the market to visit is Haizu Square market. Which would someone advise? The girls like to shop. Museums are out.
In looking at the guide book it states that line one goes from the East railway station to the stop Haizu but I cannot see that connection on my map.
What I need is some advise on how to spend our time in Guangzhou. I want ease in traveling and if necessary I could take a taxi from spot to spot.
What to do in 5 hours?
WOW! Five hours! You%26#39;ll be hopping!
I was in Guangzhou a few years ago. I thought the Quin Ping market was fascinating, and if the girls haven%26#39;t seen it, I%26#39;d be tempted to head there. They can shop AND check out all the fascinating food vendors.
As far as transport, I%26#39;d try like heck to find a taxi or transport service there at the railway station that could accompany you for the entire stay. I was very lucky to have a local guide that spoke fluent Mandarin -- I sure didn%26#39;t find much English in use in Guangzhou.
If you%26#39;d like more info, reply -- and I%26#39;ll dig up some more information for you. Have fun!

I would like as much info as possible, please. I did just read that the Qing Ping market is not what it used to be that the government had cracked down and now the exotic animals are no longer at the market.
Can anyone verify that?
Hi - came across your post as I am on my back to gz soon. Great place! If you are travelling all the way from HK I really would consider staying overnight if that is an option! The last time I tried to show somebody the tourist sites in GZ in one day they got terrible blisters...... Qin Ping is not really all it is cracked up to be, in my opinion. You are correct that it is much more civilized (relatively speaking!) these days.
Here are just a few suggestions:
Tian He area (near to East Train Station)
- Go go-karting at Tian He Sports Centre
- This is also a great area for shopping / people watching / eating - try the restaurants on the top floor of Teem Plaza
- The book centre next to the Sports Centre is massive and has a great selection
Western side of GZ
- Tomb of king NanYue - this is really interesting despite its name!
- ChenJiaCi - traditional architecture and local arts %26amp; crafts; nice atmosphere; pleasant place to spend an hour or two
- Shamian Island / Qin Ping - a pleasant stroll, but not really worth a journey from HK to see.
Hai Zhu markets area - from gadgets to silk %26amp; tailoring right through to toys, stationery and christmas decorations there is something for everyone here
If you can find the time to get out of the city centre (about 30min by subway or taxi) to Panyu then the Chime Long zoo and waterpark are really fantastic and well worth the trek.
If you do get the chance to go to gz for a couple of days of family time, maybe try the clifford hotel - lots of leisure activities on site.
we would love to stay longer in Guangzhou, but it will not be possible. All we can manage on this trip is our one day there. Thanks to all of you for the great information.
