When purchasing an Octopus card, be aware that there is a separate card for elders / seniors which provides many rides on MRT and buses at a reduced rate. By showing this you may also walk through the gate for the Kowloon - Hong Kong Island Star ferry, without being charged.
You need to show proof of age when purchasing the Octopus card initially.
The cards make travel so much easier that I would recommend buying one for even a few days stay in H-K.
The transport system is so good and it is fun to be able to travel around without constantly worrying about obtaining the correct change for each fare.
At the end of your visit it is easy to cash in the card for the remaining balance, plus initial deposit less a very small admin fee (I think the fee was HK$7 a couple of weeks ago).
Octopus card for seniors
Glad you enjoy the Octopus card I guess that%26#39;s one little thing that we HKese are proud of! And so far I haven%26#39;t seen any other of these city IC card system that%26#39;s so unified (so many cities have like 2-3 IC card systems) and can be used in such a variety of stuff.
Octopus card for seniors
Just curious, I looked at the Octopus website, but couldn%26#39;t find what the age range for ';senior'; is considered? Is it 60+ or 65+?
Thanks!

You can buy the Elder Octopus Card at age 60 or over although it doesn%26#39;t actually provide much benefit until you reach age 65. Only one bus operator Citybus offers concessionary fares at age 60 (except in respect of its cross-harbour routes which are jointly operated with KMB). All other bus operators including New World First Bus who are under the same ownership as Citybus only offer concessionary fares at age 65. On MTR trains, Light Rail, Star Ferry, Outlying Islands Ferries, Trams and Peak Tram concessionary fares apply at age 65 and on the Airport Express there are no concessionary fares for seniors. When you use the card it will automatically deduct the concessionary fare if available or if not the full adult fare is deducted.
The link below gives details of where concessionary fares/admission fees are available to visitors in respect of museums, public transport and other attractions in Hong Kong;

We purchased our Octopus card at the Tin Hau station near where we wre staying and they didn%26#39;t even ask for proof ( I guess one look at us told them we were genuine oldies! LOL!). And yes, it is something Hong Kong should be proud of. We had heard it was a good investment before we went but didn%26#39;t realise HOW good till we experienced it. The transport system is something else you guys should be proud of also. Not only is it efficient and plentiful but the Hong Kong people obviously have pride in it as the trains, stations etc are spotless!
thank you! the question was regarding my parents, and they are 62 yrs old.
